User Research Dovetail Usability Test

To evaluate the current Summary & Chapters experience, we conducted remote usability testing using Dovetail.

Participants were asked to complete a structured scenario that reflected real workflows inside Kaltura.

Key Findings from User Research

Overall, participants reported very high satisfaction with the experience. Still, several aspects did not fully align with their expectations:

Length and Tone of the Output

Participants expressed a desire for greater control over the structure of the summary. Some wanted the ability to choose the number of chapters, while others felt that the tone of the generated summary did not fully match what they had in mind.

Additionally, when users wished to adjust the tone of their draft, they were required to generate an entirely new version, a process that felt restrictive.

Despite these concerns, feedback throughout the flow remained positive, and most participants indicated a strong likelihood of recommending the tool to colleagues or friends.

Task Success Rate

After observing 8 participants performing the Summary & Chapters flow, we measured the success rate for each step.

While most tasks were completed successfully, a few critical steps caused repeated failures, especially those related to editing, adjusting detail level, and unpublishing drafts.

Identifying User Pain Points & Tasks

After reviewing all recorded usability sessions in Dovetail, we tagged users’ actions, behaviors, and moments of confusion.

This allowed us to identify clear pain points, tasks users struggled to complete, and patterns across participants.

Pain Points

Editing & Personalization

Participants wanted more intuitive and flexible editing options, including control over the number of chapters, the ability to adjust draft settings, and more accurate AI-generated content.

Navigation & Discoverability

Half of the participants struggled to locate key elements due to unclear layout or unexpected interface behavior. One participant noted that the autoplaying video was distracting.

Gap Between Expectation and Output

Participants pointed out missing capabilities they expected to see, such as multilingual support, an AI assistant for refining content, and the ability to easily share the final output.

"Let me see if I can edit it. I don’t see an option."

"If I wanted to go more granular by dividing out all seven sins into each of their own chapters, I'd like to do that."

"If I have to edit something, I would have expected an AI thing coming in for each section where I’ll be able to change the text."

KPI Definition

O1

Increase platform engagement by providing users with richer, clearer, and more structured content through automated chapters and summaries.

O2

Reduce time-to-content-creation by helping users quickly generate summaries of lectures, trainings, or videos, lowering cognitive load and improving efficiency.

O3

Improve user experience and product satisfaction by simplifying the workflow, reducing friction, and encouraging continued platform usage.

O4

Increase B2B customer value by offering AI-powered tools that enhance team productivity and reduce manual work for organizations.

Design Solutions

  1. Improved Customization & Editing Flexibility

We redesigned the editing flow to give users full control over their summary.
Users can now adjust the number of chapters, refine tone, change draft settings, and regenerate a new summary without starting from scratch.
A clearer, more prominent Edit button and a new Generate New Summary action ensure the editing experience feels intuitive and empowering.

  1. Enhanced Navigation & Discoverability

To reduce confusion, we reorganized the interface with a clearer visual hierarchy.
Key actions (Edit, Delete, Publish) were repositioned to intuitive locations, and the new right-side draft panel helps users easily manage all created summaries.
Autoplay was muted by default to prevent distraction and create a calmer workflow.

  1. AI Tools as a Core Feature of the Workflow

Based on user expectations, we introduced four new AI-powered tools:
Refine Tone – adjust writing style and narrative voice
Fine-tune Content – sharpen or expand sections using AI
Customize Chapters – split, merge, or reorganize chapters with smart logic
Dictionary – simplify technical terms or organizational jargon
These tools give users deeper creative control and align the feature with Kaltura’s business goal of maximizing AI engagement.
